People were born in the 90s (side note: if you were born 1994 and after, you’re not a 90s kid BYE YOURE A 2000s KID!!) have romanticized the idea of the 90s for a long time. We’ve seen countless memes and “only true 90s kids remember this~” when its like a picture of a ring pop. (like YES? THOSE EXIST STILL??) After a while (and I mean like 15 years) of romanticizing the 90s and things that they stood for, millennials (including myself, I am definitely a victim) are taking a stand and bringing back the fashion of their lovely 90s heritage. I mean we’ve haven’t gotten too far as to wear their pants with one leg rolled up but I’m sure it will come up in a few years.
So lets look at all these trends:
Thinking about them makes me want to vomit BUT they can actually work on some people. I’m NOT!!!! talking about the black ones that we all probably wore when we were in elementary school. These are the type of people who wear the black ones think they’re cool ’cause they listen to The 1975 with their Doc Martens. (BTW!! These chokers hurt to wear!! I felt like I was suffocating!!) (As you could tell, black chokers are a no go for me lol) But!!! What does work are the gold or silver ones like the ones Rhianna wears (so cute).
Speaking of Doc Martens…
The ultimate angsty staple. BUT don’t think they are just for people who think they are angsty, Jessica Alba was spotted wearing them with a maxi dress. (And I can’t imagine her screaming how much she hates her parents and her small town…correct me if I’m wrong). And she is not the only one who seems to be doing this. Which ultimately shows the comeback because they are now being worn with everything.
Unfortunately, this hurts me to write. I’m not a fan, but they’re in. I’ve seen them at many Forever 21 establishments, laughing to myself, thinking “wow who would ever where these???” Well it turns out, that these shoes are really big. But I feel like these are the normal-person kind of shoes. (Kylie Jenner has been spotted wearing them, but …it’s also Kylie Jenner) They definitely fall into the category of the more hipster crowd, who also wear the socks with lace.
Won’t spend much time on this, because honestly when did these go OUT of style???!!
Now THIS is something I have recently become passionate about. In the beginning of the 2000s, denim jackets we’re still very popular. But afterwards, people usually only wore them with dresses or skirts if they needed something more than a cardigan. The oversized/grunge look was long gone and those who wear them we’re considered ~unfashionable. BUT, especially this year more than ever, people are buying denim jackets left and right (guilty) and are found in basically every store. At music festivals, ESPECIALLY, people dress more ~grunge and the denim jacket has become a necessity.
But PLEASE don’t wear the same color jeans as the jacket I’M BEGGING YOU
An OBVIOUS ONE. I don’t remember when these exactly started to become fashionable again but I believe this started around 2010. And these tops still continue to shine. Every store will have at least a few crop tops hanging around and it doesn’t look like they will be leaving soon.
As much as people gave overalls crap, I LIKE THEM OKAY?!?! These are most popularly seen a little oversized. And to reach fashion heights, one may wear them with one strap down. Gives you the whole ~yeah I don’t care I have one strap down F I G H T M E look.
Thrasher magazine T-shirts
Something I used to be very strict on. I used to believe that if you didn’t skate, then you couldn’t wear these t-shirts. Alas, I had a reality check when I was on reddit and a member said that he really loved skateboarding, watched all the videos and loved the fashion/culture but couldn’t skate because he used a wheelchair. SO I changed my ways. WEAR WHAT YOU WANT IM SORRY!!!! AT LEAST YOU’RE REPPING SKATEBOARDING WHETHER YOU SKATEBOARD OR NOT!!!
But yeah these shirts are everywhere, even if you don’t skate. Some companies have even gone far enough to use the logo of Thrasher with their own brand. That’s very annoying but I’ll make an exception for this Harambe tee.
Neon has had the WEIRDEST place in our society. First its popular, then its not, then its weirdly popular in 2007 and then its not. And now??? I don’t even know I wish I could tell you. But I’ve been seeing a lot of neon windbreakers with a mix of designs. I approve though. If I lived in a chilly environment…probably would buy.
I mean… I guess it all comes down to how you wear the turtleneck. My mom LOVES turtle necks and wears them all the time, but shes also 57 so its okay. The way that people wear them now are (again) all the angsty aesthetic look. Usually black ones, thin material, and probably wearing a denim jacket over it. Hey, pair this doc martens, black skinny jeans and your tumblr account and you’re set.
Being seeing a lot of these around recently. When the normal combat boots are working, these shoes seem to be the next alternative. I’ve seen men and women wear them and work them VERY WELL. I could never because I would look like your cousin Milly who lives on a farm BUT some people do it. I approve.
In an ideal world, my top closet is just ringer tees and oversized sweaters!!! They are so beautiful to me and I jumped on this trend like no one’s business. I mean LOOK AT THEM. Its a beautiful world we are living in. T-shirts. Comfy and casual T-SHIRTS ARE FASHIONABLE. It’s really my time to shine. These are honestly a great look for anything. Whether you’re wearing shorts, jeans, chinos, army pants, skirts, or ANY KIND OF JACKET (okay maybe skip the peacoat) these tees are THRIVING. Honestly, I’ll be wearing them even if they ever turn unfashionable.
THESE ARE EVERYWHERE. I felt that maybe people were wearing them as a cool vintage~ thing but stores like Nordstrom and JCPenny’s are selling them. And if Nordstroom is selling them…then they are truly making a comeback. I will say, I don’t totally hate the trend. Some people really can pull them off. I can’t, but some people thrive in them.
Some people feel differently
Van’s Sk8 Hi’s and Oldskools
A BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL TREND THAT I COULD NOT BE MORE ON BOARD WITH!!! Vans are comfortable, stylish and fit into the grunge~ sk8r aesthetic perfectly. I’ve own my sk8 Hi’s for five months and I can’t wait to get old skools. I have NOTHING BUT GOOD WORDS ABOUT THESE.
Now this is a trend I AM ALSO ALL FOR. Before, it was mostly dads wearing baseball caps at their son’s games but no more. If you look on etsy or google under “baseball caps tumblr” (which hurts that I even have to add tumblr to it) SOOO many CUTE! baseball caps show up. They are very very in. Most popularly seen: a selfie, probably of a hot girl with bomb makeup and contour, with long fingers and possibly matte nail polish, with a finger by her mouth.
In conclusion: The fact that people are dressing as if they are 13 year old boys is so exciting to me honestly. For the most part, these trends are pretty awesome (minus the jelly shoes and chokers). Many people were making jokes on twitter earlier last month because the new blink-182 was number 1 and tons of people were playing Pokemon. Is society reverted to their old romanticized 90’s/early 2000s way?? I HOPE SO. I plan to wear khakis, vans, ringer/Thrasher tees, baseball caps and denim jackets for the rest of my adult life soo either way SOMEONE (me) is repping these trends.
